Wasn't too hot on this first listen around but i've really warmed up to the production style and such.
From what ive listened of turn on the bright lights and antics this is a pretty fair late-career entry for the kind of band like interpol. I haven't delved too deep into the lyrics but the song 'stay in touch' tells me most of what i need to know about the character paul has dubbed 'marauder'.
Other than that i love pretty much everything here aside from 'flight of fancy' and 'party's over' presently. I really love it. Johnson matthey gold serial number lookup. It sounds very gritty and alive to me and is a lot of fun to listen to. NYSMAW has become one of my favorite songs of all time from them, and I really like the more straight-forward (and of funny) lyrics from Paul. (I remember reading the “rock and roll bitch” line in the lyrics before listening and being like dear lord, why. But his delivery on that song makes the whole thing hilarious and intentionally pathetic.) I’m also not really getting the complaints that everything that Interpol does is the same. This album feels like an obvious change to me.
Obviously, they have a very distinct sound that is their identity as a band, but I feel like that has damned them a bit because they sound like themselves and so the first thought after that is “oh they aren’t doing anything different.” There’s a difference between retaining your sound and not evolving. This is a clear evolution to me. I also feel like the way Paul is singing suits this songs, but that’s just me. There are a few moments where the production feels a bit much to me, I will say. I am a Fridmann fan but this is not my favorite example of his work. This is a decent album, much better than the last couple of interpol albums, but to me it's still lacking in some areas.
The songwriting is better than its been in years, songs like The Rover and If You Really Love Nothing are their most dynamic in a decade. My biggest issue is the production.
I like Dave Fridmann but I dont think his sound fits this band. Everything is too spikey and compressed. Interpol works better with open spaces.
