I was looking for a new concealed carry gun today and picked up a used Makarov 9x18mm. For previous concealed carry, I had two choices: a wonderful Ruger P89, which is so huge, it is difficult to conceal or a horrible little P3AT, the Kel Tec's.380 bug gun. At the gun store, I traded the used Kel Tec and fifty dollars for the Makarov (it was originally marked $200). I liked the Makarov because it was way smaller than the Ruger P89, but far more functional than the awful little Kel Tec. The Kel Tec jumps all over the place, has a very long and hard trigger pull, has nonadjustable sights, and can barely hit anything at ten yards.

Dec 07, 2012  Import Serial number = H609427 3 import marks = A horseshoe looking mark with a P in it, A circle with an arrow pointing up, and a Circle with a mark that looks like a 'n' I can not for the life of me figure out how old it is. I know this is not a genuine Russian Makarov, that is beyond the point. Someone please help me figure out how old this is.

Also, if you don't take very good care of it, the Kel Tec malfunctions. Most of it is plastic. As some of you know, nothing means more to me in a gun than ruggedness and reliability, which the Marakov has a very strong reputation for. I tested the pistol and it shot like a dream.

To test the pistol (it was used, after all), I shot all 8 rounds in about six seconds at ten yards. I got all but two right on the bulls eye. I think that's very good for simply zapping off shots like that on a gun I've never fired before. It's the most comfortable pistol I think I've ever shot and the recoil is impressively light.

This one is a Baikal Marakov, made in Russia. Here are a couple of photos. The other photos have to do with questions, which I hope some people more knowledgable than me can answer. Now for the questions. I notice there are serial numbers on the left side of the pistol above the grip.

The number if J052477. Weirdly, that number is stamped over top of ANOTHER, lighter serial number. That original serial number is repeated above the trigger guard, under the model number. It reads: AKB0528. Why are there two serial numbers? Why was the first serial number stamped over with the new serial number?

Pictures below. Next, do these pistols have any information on what year it was manufactured? Also, is there any other information you knowledgable folks can give me based on the markings? The markings on the left side above the trigger guard is the model number: IJ70-18A. Then it says, 'Made in Russia by IMEZ.' Also on the left side, above the grip is the original serial number, the new one on top of it, the code 'SA01', and three symbols, visible in the third photo. The left side grip has a star and the word, 'Baikal' in quotes.

The right side of the gun has, on the slide, the words 'Cal. 9mm Marakov,' 'K.B.I.,' and 'ING.HBG.PA.' The grip also has a star and a 'Made in Russia' tag. Photo of the right side slide lettering below. Any information you could give me about this particular Makaraov based on that information would be greatly appreciated! *EDIT* The left side grip also has a little metal ring on the bottom.

What is that for? */EDIT* Last of all, I disassembled the pistol and I'm not sure the firing pin is in right.

These are the 8 round mags. If your pistol takes the 12 round mags they wont work. Your pistol is one of the Russian commercial Maks. Be careful as the adjustable sights are a bit fragile and are non-standard if they break and need to be replaced. The Mak makes a great carry gun.
